Drawn to the Rhythm Tent: A Tale from a Participant’s Point of View
Walking the fairgrounds with Amy, 8, and Jason, 10, Marcy and Dave hear and feel the deep beats of the bass drum first. As they approach the Rhythm Tent, they hear the delightful percussion melody of a hundred drums playing together in song. The infectious rhythm draws them closer. Then Marcy sees who is in this percussion orchestra: People just like them! Kids, too! “Can anyone play?” she questions. “I want to play!” says Jason.
“Yes!” comes the answer, as a Rhythm Weaver drum circle facilitator guides them to four empty seats. She helps each one position their drum comfortably, and shows them the basics of playing. One-two-three-four. Soon the whole family is playing along with the pulse of the entire group.
“Now add a few notes,” says the facilitator in the center. “Feel your rhythm. Make it your own!”
“Make it my own?” Marcy wonders. “Do I have rhythm?” She adds a couple of beats in between the four-count pulse – tentatively at first, then with more confidence as she repeats the pattern. “I’m getting it,” she thinks. Looking up, she sees Dave, Amy and Jason smiling playfully as they trade drumbeats back and forth.
Marcy then looks around the drum circle and sees her whole town represented. The drummers are all ages, sizes, shapes and colors, and they’re all playing together. And what a song! Marcy has never heard such melody and dynamics in drumming music before. She listens again to the notes she is playing, and feels satisfaction knowing her contribution is just right for the whole song.
Marcy and the family follow the facilitator’s guidance to play louder and softer, then accent some notes. Finally, the drummers follow the facilitator’s signals to crescendo and then STOP – all together on the same beat. “Wow!” Marcy thinks as the crowd erupts in cheers, claps and drum rumbles.
“Can we do it again?” asks Amy as the facilitator reminds the group that several more drum circles will be held during the Festival Weekend.
“Yes,” says Dave. “Let’s come back again before we leave tonight!’

“Drum Magic was the perfect addition to the Des Moines Arts Festival. The drum circle provided the opportunity for patrons of all ages to participate in a community activity and enhance their experience at the Festival. Jana and her crew were outstanding at engaging participants and always gathered a large crowd for every performance.”

"I just HAD to come home and email you to thank you for the amazing drumming experience that I had tonight at the Des Moines Arts Festival! I was so impressed, I had so much fun!!! "I have always loved to drum... but what struck me tonight was the shear magnetic force pulling people in under the tent... when my family & I sat down, there were just a handful of people drumming... when we left - it was PACKED!! Our three daughters loved it - they are 7, 4 & 1. Our baby put her foot on the drum as I tapped out the rhythm...she smiled every time I hit it and her foot would bounce up."

"Your group was a wonderful, unique addition to our festival!! I’m so glad someone knew about Drum Magic in order to bring it here! Our 8 year old daughter always enjoys the festival because community groups offer kids so much to do and see there, but the drumming was such a great surprise! ...It really made it a memorable festival."
